Why a design may be revisited, but no two pieces are ever quite the same.
Alongside my editioned sculpture, I create one-of-a-kind sculptural furniture, lighting, candlesticks and other functional pieces in bronze.
These works are individually made rather than produced as editions. Many of the finer details are modelled directly in wax, while branches, leaves, birds and wildlife are incorporated into the structure as the piece develops.
This means that even when I return to an earlier idea, the next piece will never be an exact reproduction.
I may revisit a particular landscape, tree form or arrangement of wildlife, but change the proportions, animals, branches or other details. Patination and hand-finishing introduce further individual variations.
I think of it as a story retold differently.
Having my own foundry gives me complete control over this process. I can take a piece from the original sculpture and wax work through casting, assembly, chasing, finishing and patination, making decisions and adjustments as the work develops.
This is particularly important with bespoke work. A table, lamp or candelabra can begin with an existing piece as a point of reference, or with an entirely new idea developed for a particular interior or space.
Pieces can be created in different sizes, designs and styles, and lighting and candlesticks can also be developed as matching or complementary pairs.
The intention is not to reproduce something that already exists, but to create another individual work with a story of its own.
