An African landscape retold through sculpture, furniture and functional art.
With Beneath the Acacia, I wanted to create more than a table. I wanted the structure itself to become part of an African landscape.
Giraffes move quietly across the savannah beneath the spreading canopy of an acacia, while above them a leopard lounges along a branch-like rail, watching the landscape and the animals below. It is a scene familiar to anyone who has spent time on safari – moments of stillness and movement, predator and prey, all sharing the same landscape.
The structure of the table becomes part of that scene. Bronze branches form the frame, while the wildlife and tree are integrated into the design rather than simply added as decoration. From a distance it functions as a piece of furniture; viewed more closely, a miniature landscape begins to reveal itself.
Like my other sculptural furniture, Beneath the Acacia was individually created and cast in bronze in my own foundry. It is a one-of-a-kind work.
Similar tables can be created on request, but rather than reproducing a piece exactly, I prefer the idea of a story retold differently – changing the composition, scale, design, wildlife or landscape while retaining the spirit of the original.
